Five suspected illegal miners were arrested on Monday in the Burgersfort area of Limpopo for possession of chrome.
Col. Police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe said members of the community informed police that chrome was being mined illegally at a mine in the Mecklenburg police area.
When police arrived at the mine, five suspects, aged between 38 and 58, were found and immediately arrested. They were in possession of chrome loaded on a Toyota Hilux bakkie, as well as a variety of excavator tools.
The five suspects are expected to appear in Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of illegal mining and possession of suspected stolen chrome.
Lt. Genl. Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba commended the members of the police for their dedication to curbing illegal mining operations across the province.
