A teenage boy (13) from Mpumalanga was shot dead by robbers in his parents’ home this week while his mother worked the night shift at a mine.
Brig. Police spokesman Leonard Hlathi said in a statement that the teenager was shot dead in the early hours of Tuesday morning when two robbers broke into his parents’ home in Clarinet near eMalahleni (Witbank). The robbers probably did not realize the boy was home.
Hlathi said the boy may have woken up from a noise after which he noticed that there was someone in the house. The boy then locked himself in a room in the house after which he yelled for help.
The screams caught the robbers’ attention and they went to the room where they broke down the bedroom door and smothered the teen, Hlathi said.
Hlathi said one of the suspects fired a shot at the unconscious teenager before he and his companion fled with a television set.
Neighbors heard the boy’s emergency cries and the shot and called for help. However, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.
Lt. Genl. Provincial police commissioner Mondli Zuma strongly condemned the incident.
“These suspects can only be regarded as cowards who saw an innocent and defenseless child as prey after they smothered him and he was already lying motionless,” Zuma said.
Police are investigating a case of house robbery and murder. No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.
