Two police officers from Manenberg police station in Cape Town have been arrested on charges of corruption.
Sergeant. Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said the two officers, 32 and 35 years old, respectively, were arrested at the police station on Sunday.
“The officers allegedly visited the complainant’s house in Athlone on June 15, 2019, accusing him of manufacturing and selling passports. They took him to Manenberg police station and seized his laptop and cell phones, ”Rwexana explained.
“At the police station, they demanded money to secure his release. The complainant said he had only R5 000 in cash at his home. They took him home and reportedly returned his laptop and cellphones in exchange for the R5 000 he paid. “
The case was reported to the anti-corruption unit and after the Athlone Magistrate’s Court issued a warrant for their arrest, the officers were arrested. They will appear in court soon.
