Two suspects have been arrested after an elderly man was killed on a farm outside Alexandria in the Eastern Cape on Saturday.
Capt. Police spokesperson Mali Govender told Maroela Media on Sunday that police officers were called to the Nooitgedacht farm near Alexandria around 6.30 pm after the body of a man in his late 70s was found earlier in a farm shop.
According to Govender, one of the community members came across the man’s bloodied body when he wanted to go and buy necessities at the store. The store’s door was open upon the person’s arrival even though the security door was locked.
“When no one responded to his call, he peeked into the shop and saw a bloodied hand sticking out from under the counter. “He called the victim’s sons who entered the store and found the man’s lifeless body,” Govender said.
Shortly afterwards, police officers and local farmers located and arrested two men, aged 16 and 23, in connection with the murder.
It is not clear at this stage how the man killed or what the motive for the murder is.
“This cowardly attack on an innocent victim is strongly condemned and the police will not leave a stone unturned in this investigation,” said Lt. Gen. Provincial police chief Liziwe Ntshinga said in response to the incident.
The suspects will appear in court soon.
