Two shooting incidents Tuesday in Philippi East on the Cape Flats claimed a total of six lives. Police are investigating the possibility that the two shooting incidents may be related.
Brig. Police spokesperson Novela Potelwa says members of the Philippi East Crime Prevention Unit found a shooting between two warring parties in two Toyota Avanza vehicles in Thekwane Road on Tuesday afternoon. A 19-year-old man was shot dead in the incident.
Potelwa says when those involved in the shootout noticed the police, they started firing at the police. Police fired back and shot the one suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the second shooting incident, police officers were called to Blok Vier on Tuesday evening in the settlement, where four men were found dead in a home. Potelwa said police are currently investigating the two shooting incidents, as well as the possibility that the two incidents may be linked.
“We believe the investigation will also shed light on the motive for the shootings,” says Potelwa.
Albert Fritz, community safety MEC in the Western Cape, expressed his dissatisfaction with the incidents.
“I was told that, following the shooting, police have assembled a team of detectives specializing in serious violent crimes to investigate the two shooting incidents. The detectives are currently interviewing several people to get behind the ax, ”says Fritz.
