Covid-19 statistics: More than 7,000 new cases

A total of 7 210 new confirmed cases of the new coronavirus were reported in South Africa during the past 24-hour cycle. That brings the overall number of Covid-19 cases in the country to 131,800.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced the latest Covid-19 statistics for South Africa on Saturday night.

According to Mkhize, another 73 Covid-19 related deaths were reported during the period. These deaths were reported in KwaZulu-Natal (3), the Eastern Cape (13), Gauteng (17), and the Western Cape (40), respectively.

A total of 2 413 patients have already died of the virus, with a death rate of 1.8%.

However, a total of 67 094 patients have already recovered at this stage, with a recovery rate of 50.9%.

According to Mkhize, 1 529 009 tests have been performed to date, of which more than half (51%) have been done in the private sector.

The Western Cape still reported the most confirmed cases of Covid 19 to date (59 315) followed by Gauteng (34 285) and the Eastern Cape with 23 658 confirmed cases.
