A 50-year-old man appeared in the Queenstown Magistrate’s Court on Friday after being caught in possession of 27 bags of marijuana with a street value of about R500 000 earlier this week.
Brig. Police spokesman Tembinkosi Kinana said in a statement Wednesday that police officers received information about two suspicious vehicles near one of the town’s shopping centers.
Kinana said police officers approached the driver of one of the vehicles, which both vehicles searched. Police seized the bags of marijuana already loaded on the two vehicles. One of the drivers was arrested at the scene. However, the other driver was able to evade arrest.
The driver is now charged with possession of marijuana.
The arrest is the second largest in the province over the past week after 103 bags of marijuana were intercepted by Bizana police earlier this week. The bags were on their way from Durban to Cape Town.
According to Kinana, three suspects were then arrested. The suspects have already appeared in the Bizana Magistrate’s Court and the case has been postponed until June 4. The suspects remain in custody.
